It is said within the wisdom of Ifá that divination is not simply about seeking answers, but about remembering. Through this sacred practice, individuals are guided toward a deeper understanding of their Ori, revealing the truth of who they are and the path they were always meant to walk.

In Yoruba spirituality, Ori, which literally translates to head, also known as the spiritual head, represents one’s inner knowing, spiritual intuition, and personal divinity. It is the seat of consciousness, the inner knowing that guides decisions, shapes perception, and determines the course of one’s life. Ori is not separate from you, it is the highest expression of you.

In this way, Ifá becomes a mirror, helping one unlock their life’s purpose and move in alignment with the spiritual blueprint that was chosen long before they arrived here.

“When Ori is working against an individual, such individual would think human being is behind his or her ill luck”

This speaks to a deeper misunderstanding that happens when one is out of alignment with their Ori. Instead of recognizing internal misalignment, the individual begins to look outward, blaming others for their circumstances. This creates cycles of frustration and confusion, because the true source is not external, but internal. When Ori is not in agreement, life can feel obstructed, and without awareness, it becomes easy to misplace that responsibility onto others rather than recognizing the need for inner realignment.

“Without a head, a snake is just a rope.”

This reminds us of the power and authority of Ori. Without the head, there is no direction, no consciousness, and no life force guiding one’s path. Just as a snake without its head loses its essence, a person without alignment to their Ori loses their sense of direction and purpose. Ori is what animates, directs, and gives meaning to existence.

“Hundreds of wisdom, thousands of knowledge, none can never outrun your Ori”

No matter how much knowledge one acquires or how wise one becomes, nothing can override the authority of Ori. You can learn endlessly, seek guidance, and gain understanding, but it is Ori that carries one into fulfillment. It is Ori that governs destiny, and it is the final authority over one’s path.

With this understanding, we can begin to look at Ori through the lens of wellness, and everything becomes clearer. Just as we place emphasis on caring for the physical body, there must also be an awareness of spiritual wellness, and at the center of that is the care of one’s Ori.

In many modern understandings of wellness, especially in Western frameworks, it is often described as mind, body, and soul.

However, true alignment does not begin there.

True alignment begins with the soul, then the mind, and finally the body. Within the teachings of Ifá, Ori, as the spiritual head, is the origin point. It is the inner consciousness that shapes thought, and those thoughts ultimately manifest into physical reality.

When the order is reversed, people may attempt to fix the body or control the mind without addressing the source. But when alignment begins within, everything else follows. The mind becomes clearer, decisions become more intentional, and the body reflects that internal balance.

From this place, we begin to understand the difference between a cool Ori and a hot Ori.

This is the reflection of a cool Ori, known as Ori tútù within the teachings of Ifá. When Ori is cool, opposition does not break a person, it builds them. Challenges become something they move through, not something that consumes them. There is resilience. There is emotional stability. There is a quiet strength that allows them to remain centered even when life itself is not. This is because a cool Ori is aligned with destiny. It is a destiny that is intact, not fragmented or working against itself. Even in difficulty, there is direction. Even in uncertainty, there is clarity.

Have you ever come across someone who, no matter what is happening around them, remains calm, steady, and composed?

No matter how chaotic their environment becomes, no matter how much adversity they face, they still move with clarity and control. They are not ignoring life, but they are not overtaken by it. They continue forward with intention, grounded in themselves. This is the presence of a cool Ori.

On the flip side, when a person’s Ori is hot, you may notice that opposition does not seem to build them. It overwhelms them, overtakes them, and ultimately devours them. Challenges are not something they move through with clarity, but something that begins to take hold of them. This reflects a hot or misaligned Ori, often referred to as Ori burú or Ori ibù within the teachings of Ifá. In this state, there is emotional instability, reactivity, and a lack of inner grounding that makes it difficult to move through life in truth, intention, direction, and precision.

In this state, however, it can become the root of both spiritual and mental disease if left unchecked. The imbalance within begins to reflect outwardly, showing up as poor decision making, inner conflict, feeling stuck, and a life that feels unsettled. What is happening internally starts to shape external experiences, creating strongholds that are difficult to break.

Have you ever seen someone who seems constantly unsettled, scattered, and restless?

Someone who struggles with insatiable desires, living in a constant state of confusion or inner conflict. Even when they appear to have it together, something feels off. There is no real sense of direction or grounding. This is how Ori reveals itself, through one’s choices, patterns, and the way they move through life.

At its root, this happens because a hot Ori is not in alignment with that individual’s destiny. Actions and choices are no longer guided by inner knowing, but by reaction and imbalance. Even small obstacles can feel overwhelming, and instead of moving with clarity, a person may find themselves reacting to life rather than being guided through it.

Understanding this brings us back to a deeper truth. Within the Yoruba tradition, Ori is not only the guide of your life, but also the determinant of your success.

Your Ori is your soul’s blueprint.

It is not something that can be exchanged or traded. Your Ori is your Ori, just as the next person’s Ori is theirs. Each of us carries a unique path, a unique design, and a unique set of alignments that are meant specifically for us.

Another important aspect to understand within the teachings of Ifá is the role of Iwa, often referred to as character, and more specifically, Iwa Pẹ̀lẹ́, which speaks to good character, gentleness, and right conduct.

While Ori represents your inner knowing, your spiritual blueprint, and your divine alignment, Iwa is how that alignment is expressed in the physical world. It is not enough to know your path, you must also live in a way that reflects it.

When there is alignment between Ori and Iwa, when your actions reflect your inner truth, life begins to flow differently. Decisions become clearer, relationships become more balanced, and your path unfolds with greater ease. This is where true harmony is created, not just within, but outwardly as well.

However, when there is a disconnect between the two, when your actions are not in alignment with your Ori, it creates friction. Even if your Ori is guiding you, your lack of alignment in behavior can disrupt the flow of your life. This is why character is not separate from destiny, it is a part of how destiny is fulfilled.

In this way, Iwa Pẹ̀lẹ́ becomes essential. It is the discipline of living in alignment, the embodiment of your Ori through your actions, your decisions, and the way you move through the world.

Because it is not only about knowing your path.

It is about living it.

Yet many people fall into the habit of looking outward. They see the lives of others, their success, their qualities, their talents, and begin to desire what was never meant for them. They try to embody traits, paths, or lifestyles that are not rooted in their own Ori. While it may seem appealing on the surface, this creates a deeper misalignment within.

When you attempt to live outside of your own blueprint, you begin to work against yourself. Your Ori, no longer in agreement, can become unsettled. What once could have flowed begins to feel blocked. Efforts become harder. Obstacles become more frequent. There is a sense of resistance that follows your actions, not because you are incapable, but because you are moving in a direction that is not authentically your own.

To abandon your Ori is to abandon yourself.

Until you come into alignment with your Ori, there will always be a sense of resistance. You may move forward, and you may seem to achieve, even experiencing moments of progress here and there, but something will always feel off.

There will be a lingering sense of discomfort, unhappiness, and lack of fulfillment. A quiet dissatisfaction that remains.

Because more than likely, you are operating outside of what was chosen for you, outside of your true path, and outside of your alignment.

Which is why, in the pursuit of true wellness, you must begin at the source.

To truly understand wellness, you must begin with Ori. Not mind, body, and then soul, but soul, mind, and body. Because what happens within your Ori shapes your thoughts, and your thoughts shape your reality.

When your Ori is in harmony, so is your external world. Everything begins to fall into place as it was destined and intended, not through force, but through alignment.

Ori mi, mo kí ẹ.

Ori mi, má pada lẹ́yìn mi o.

Ori inu mi, gbe mi o.

Mu mi rin ona ire.

Àṣẹ.

My Ori, I greet you.

My Ori, do not turn your back on me.

My inner Ori, lift me up.

Guide me along the path of goodness.

Aṣẹ.
